What does this measure?

The age-adjusted rate of all new cancers diagnosed per 10,000 residents, averaged over five years.

Why is this important?

According to the Centers for Disease Control, cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and the leading cause of death in Massachusetts. High incidence rates can indicate environmental or behavior risks of cancers, or better diagnosis of cancers.

How is our county performing?

In 2016-20, Worcester County's cancer incidence rate was 47 per 10,000 individuals, or about 4,800 people. This was slightly higher than the state rate of 45 and the national rate of 44 per 100,000, and the same as it was in 2008-12.
